[...] Reeve Lionel Bennett received a letter from Brampton West-Mississauga MP Colleen Beaumier congratulating the town on the achievement of having a Narconon facility locate in the municipality. She explained how, in her capacity as the chair of the Parliamentary Sub-Committee on Human Rights she toured Narconon Los Angeles, “an eye opening experience to the amount of good work they are doing in our society.” She continued, “I understand there have been concerns expressed in Marmora about Narconon and the Scientologists. On a personal note, I have relatives who reside in Clearwater, Florida, which is also home to the world spiritual centre for Scientologists. There are 10,000 Scientologists in the Tampa Bay area. My relatives are Christian and were initially deeply concerned about the massive presence of the Scientologists in the downtown area. It has, however, been proven over the years that they have benefitted the community of Clearwater and improved the conditions of the downtown area immensely.” She concluded, “Although Narconon is secular, and not in the Church of Scientology, I would expect Marmora to benefit similarly and eventually be proud of its presence.
